Everyone who has volunteered says it is FUN!
Volunteers must: 

• be at least 16 years or older

• work from 8AM - 4PM with 1 hour lunch break

• wear comfortable clothes and shoes

Unity Build is a Habitat project which brings together members from 15 congregations in the greater New Orleans area to build a Habitat house. We are participating as GNOUU so it includes all three of our congregations. We pledged $1500 for the build so please continue to donate. Members from all 15 participating churches will be signing up to participate in the build. The need for volunteers varies from 20 to 35 depending on the requirements for that day. The only way to sign up is to contact Dian McIlwain. Since space is limited you might want to provide your first and second choice. You can sign up for as many days as you wish depending on the need and availability of slots. We will do our best to accommodate you. We need your email address and telephone number so we can reach you on the day for which you volunteered should we need to and provide you with further information if it becomes available.  If you have an emergency and cannot work as scheduled please identify an alternate to work for you, if possible. It might also work for a few people to sign up as alternates and we can call on you if need be.  It is important that you show up as scheduled since they are building this house in a month and are on a tight schedule.

You do not need any special skills to participate in the build. They will find a place for you to help. If you do have skills advise the contractor staff. You do not need to bring any tools or special equipment. You do not have to bring food or drinks as they will be provided. Where appropriate and comfortable clothing suitable for work. Wear closed toed shoes.

There is also a need for at least 2 people a day for registration. You will need to be there early in the morning. If you are interested in volunteering for this position please contact Dian McIlwain.

The house is located in the upper ninth ward at 3071 North Dorgenois St. The habitat family is the family of Latonya Toomer. She will be working on her own house with the volunteers.

Thursday October 3 – Framing, Walls, Beams  - CEREMONIAL WALL RAISING
Friday October 4 – Framing, Walls, Trusses
Saturday October 5 is FULL
Sunday October 6 – Trusses, roofing, shingles, siding
Thursday October 10 – Shingles, interior framing, siding
Friday October 11 – Shingles, siding, paint, caulking
Saturday October 12 – Shingles, soffit, fascia  - GNOUU is providing lunch and snacks
Thursday October 17 – interior painting, exterior painting
Friday October 18 – Flooring, pre painting, doors trim
Saturday October 19 is FULL
Thursday October 24 – Trim, exterior paint/caulk, exterior handrails
Friday October 25 – Exterior finishing, flatwork
Saturday October 26 – Punch out, Sod, fence – DEDICATION DAY CEREMONY. KEYS ARE PRESENTED TO THE NEW OWNER. ALL ARE INVITED TO ATTEND. 

We will be providing lunch and snacks for at least one day during the build. We have chosen October 12. If need be as the slots we might be signing up for another day. A meal train has been set up by Kathy Gibbs of NSUUS. Select the button below to sign up for the meal train.
